There have more natural disasters than we can count over the past few months. And I don’t know about you, but that always makes me a little nervous as a mom.
Moms want to keep their kids safe at all costs, but what if you just don’t have the time to prepare?
There has been prep time for some of the disasters that have taken place, but with many, you just have to get up and GO!
So how do you prepare?
There are many people who believe in 1 year food storages and 72 hour kits. I am one of those people. But even I don’t have all of those provisions put together yet since it can be EXPENSIVE!
You know what I do have though?
An emergency 24 hour go bag.
What is an emergency 24 hour go bag though?
It is a small bag with the few necessities that you would need for you and your child that would take care of you for at least 24 hours that you can literally just grab and GO!
Even if you have a substantial food storage or a 72 hour kit, I still recommend creating one of these go bags. Oftentimes, food storages or 72 hour kits could be in a basement that might flood. But your emergency 24 hour go bag will sit right in your pantry, ready to go with no thought necessary!
Any everyone needs that kind of peace of mind!
So what do you need?
There are different categories of items that you will want to pack:
- Health and safety
- 1 pair of underwear (if potty trained)
- 2-3 diapers (exact number will depend on the age of your child)
- 1 pair of socks
- Heated blanket
Health and Safety
- Children’s Tylenol
- 2 bandaids
- Hand sanitizer
- Half a roll of toilet paper
- Mini flashlight or small glow stick
- Hand warmers
- Small toothbrush and mini toothpaste
Comfort (these items will depend of the needs of your child)
- Small toy
- Coloring pages with 2-3 crayons
- Soft blanket
- Mini water bottle that can be refilled
- Mini gatorade
- Capri sun (these juices will provide some sugar and help hydrate your child if they don’t love water)
- Small baggie of candies (to give sugar, not just as comfort foods)
- Easily stored foods that are more like a meal replacement
The reason why it is important to get foods that your child will like, is because many young children won’t understand what an “emergency” really is. My son, for example, with his autism and sensory processing disorder will honestly just not eat if he doesn’t like his options. Making sure your child gets something in him (even if not the healthiest items) in an emergency will be far more important than starving.
I’m serious. I know it sounds like I’m exaggerating, but there really are kids who would choose starvation. So choose the foods carefully.
Why do all of this?
As moms, we are expert worriers. I think it’s in the job description. But we really don’t have to worry if we are prepared!
While creating these emergency 24 hour go bags may seem expensive and slightly time consuming (since they are), they are WORTH IT!
Knowing that you can take care of your children in the case of an emergency will ease your mind immensely.
Trust me. With the craziness in the world, you want to always be prepared!
